Big Question
Where is Georgia?

The United States is so big it is divided into five regions. Georgia lives in the Southeast — a warm, green part of the country near the Atlantic Ocean.

Knowing Georgia's region helps us understand its weather, its neighbors, and its history.
The 5 Regions
The five regions of the United States

From the cold Northeast to the sunny Southeast, across the flat Midwest, through the dry Southwest, to the mountainous West — every region has its own character.

Georgia's Land
Georgia's topography — mountains and plains

Northern Georgia has the Blue Ridge Mountains — cool, rainy, and tall. Southern Georgia is the warm, flat Coastal Plain. In between, rivers carry water from the mountains to the sea.

Who Was He?
Benjamin Franklin — inventor, writer, Founding Father

Born in Boston in 1706, Benjamin Franklin became one of the most important people in American history — a printer, inventor, scientist, and Founding Father who helped start the United States.

Inventions
Franklin's famous inventions

Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm and proved that lightning is electricity. He then invented the lightning rod, which protects buildings from being struck. He also invented bifocal glasses and improved the wood stove.

Civic Service
Franklin served his community

Franklin started America's first lending library so people could borrow and share books. He also created a fire company to fight fires and a hospital. And he helped write the Declaration of Independence.

Then vs. Now
Life in Franklin's time vs. today

In Franklin's time (1700s), people traveled by horse, lit their homes with candles, and wrote letters by hand. Today we have cars, electric lights, and phones. Many things have changed — but people still read, invent, and help their communities, just as Franklin did.

Economics
Goods and services — what people make and do

Everything people buy or use is either a good (a physical thing you can hold) or a service (an action someone does for you). Franklin the printer made goods. Franklin the postmaster provided a service.

Civics
Symbols of our government

The American flag represents our nation. The bald eagle is the national symbol — it stands for freedom and strength. The Pledge of Allegiance is our promise to be loyal to our country.
